Kampala, Uganda – Uganda Police have released an official statement providing new details on the horrific attack at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program, including the suspect’s full identity and the names of the four young victims. The incident, which sent shockwaves across the East African nation, has now taken a clearer but no less painful shape as authorities work tirelessly to uncover the truth.

Police Response

According to a statement from Police Spokesperson ASP Kituuma on Thursday, April 2, 2026:

“Today, Thursday, April 2, 2026, at around 1100 hours, the Police in Ggaba responded to a distress call reporting an individual allegedly attacking children at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program, a daycare centre located in Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala City.”

Responding officers managed to arrest the suspect at the scene. Police say the rapid response prevented further loss of life, as the suspect was still on the premises when law enforcement arrived. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing screams coming from inside the daycare before officers rushed in and subdued the attacker.

Suspect Identified

Police have named the suspect as Okello Christopher Onyum, aged 39 years old – correcting earlier reports that gave the suspect’s age as 34. The discrepancy arose from initial eyewitness accounts, but official documentation has now confirmed the correct age. Onyum is currently in custody at a secure police facility, where he is being held for interrogation.

Victims Named

The four minors who tragically lost their lives have been identified as follows:

Eteku Gideon is a male juvenile aged approximately 2 years. He was described by neighbors as a cheerful little boy who loved playing with toy cars.

Kaise Alungat is a female juvenile aged approximately 2 years. She becomes the only confirmed girl among the four deceased victims.

Ignatius Sserwange is a male juvenile aged approximately 3 years. He was the oldest of the four victims.

Ryan Odeke is a male juvenile aged approximately 2 years. Family members say he had just started attending the daycare two weeks ago.

All four victims were pupils of the same daycare facility in Ggaba. They were attacked during regular school hours while under the care of staff who have since been questioned by investigators.

Investigation Ongoing

Police confirmed that the suspect is currently under interrogation as investigations continue to establish his motive, his background, and any other relevant circumstances surrounding this heinous crime. Investigators are also looking into whether the suspect had any prior connection to the school or any of the victims’ families.

Earlier reports suggested the suspect posed as a parent to gain entry to the school. Police have not yet officially confirmed this detail but say it remains part of their inquiry. The weapon used in the attack, believed to be sharp nails, has been recovered and sent for forensic analysis.
