H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Kaguta Museveni is expected next week to preside over the official commissioning of the Yaobai Cement Uganda cement and clinker plant located in Moroto District, Karamoja Sub-region.The multi-million-dollar project, valued at over USD 300 million, is one of the largest industrial investments in Northern Uganda and represents a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing industrialisation agenda. It also reflects growing investor confidence in Karamoja as an emerging investment destination. The facility has been developed with a Phase I production capacity of more than 6,000 tonnes of clinker per day. This positions it as a major contributor to Uganda’s cement production capacity and industrial growth.Once fully operational, the plant is expected to reduce Uganda’s dependence on imported clinker by approximately 2.5 million tonnes annually. This reduction is projected to strengthen local supply chains, support price stability, and improve the availability of cement for the construction and infrastructure sectors across the country. In addition to its industrial significance, the project is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for local communities. It will also stimulate small and medium enterprises in the surrounding areas through increased demand for goods and services, thereby contributing to improved household incomes and local economic development.Government officials note that the investment aligns with Uganda’s broader vision of transforming the economy through value addition, industrial expansion, and regional development. Karamoja, which has historically faced development challenges, is increasingly being positioned as a viable hub for industrial and economic activity. The commissioning ceremony is expected to bring together senior government officials, regional and district leaders, development partners, investors, and representatives from cultural and community institutions. The event highlights a shared commitment to inclusive growth and sustainable development.Overall, the establishment of the Yaobai Cement Uganda plant marks a significant step in Uganda’s journey toward self-sufficiency in construction materials and reinforces Karamoja’s growing role in the national development agenda.
