
Agago District today commemorated World Water Day under the theme “Accelerating Safely Managed Sanitation for a Healthier Uganda”, with the slogan “Where water flows, equality grows.”The pre-event activities included a mass sanitation drive within the Lamiyo Sub-county community, aimed at promoting hygiene and improving public health standards.The main celebration was held at Alyek Primary School in Lamiyo Sub-county, which was selected as the host venue in recognition of its outstanding performance in the 2025 Micro-Scale Development (MDD) assessments, particularly in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives.Speaking at the event, Agago District Water Officer, Oroma Emma, outlined the procedure communities should follow to access safe water services. He explained that Local Council One (LC1) leaders are required to mobilize residents and formally submit a request to the Office of the Senior Assistant Secretary. The request is then forwarded to the District Water Office for technical assessment, inspection, and possible implementation.The event attracted a wide range of stakeholders and development partners, including World Vision, ADRA, the Lutheran World Federation, district officials, Lamiyo Sub-county leaders, Alyek Primary School representatives, and members of the local community.The Chief Guest, Hon. Akello Beatrice Akori, who serves as the State Minister for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President and is also the Agago District Woman Member of Parliament, emphasized the importance of sanitation at the household level. She urged families to prioritize hygiene as a key responsibility.Hon. Akello also announced that in the 2026/2027 financial year, Alyek Primary School will benefit from the construction of a modern latrine under a government school grant. In addition, Riba Village in Otaka Parish is set to receive a new borehole to improve access to clean water for residents.As part of the celebrations, 10 households from Otaka Parish were recognized and rewarded for maintaining high hygiene standards.
