Raising a matter of national importance, Ssenyonyi questioned whether Uganda would meet the required standards in time, citing delays in infrastructure development and inconsistencies in project execution. He warned that ongoing setbacks could jeopardize the country’s ability to host the prestigious continental tournament.

“Are we going to be ready for AFCON 2027?” Ssenyonyi asked, noting that Uganda has already invested billions of shillings into stadium construction and upgrades. He stressed that the public deserves transparency and accountability regarding how taxpayer money is being spent.

The opposition leader expressed particular concern about the apparent lack of adherence to international standards, pointing to reports that recently completed facilities may not meet required benchmarks. He referenced the case of Hoima City Stadium, which was commissioned but is reportedly falling short of expectations, raising questions about the planning and execution process.

“We seem to be shooting first and aiming later,” Ssenyonyi remarked, criticizing what he described as poor coordination and the absence of a clear implementation framework aligned with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards.

He also highlighted troubling claims regarding Akii-Bua Stadium, which is reportedly only 30 percent complete despite being counted among key AFCON facilities. The situation, he argued, calls for urgent clarification and a comprehensive status report to Parliament.

Ssenyonyi further demanded updates on the renovation of Mandela National Stadium, emphasizing that delays or substandard work could undermine Uganda’s credibility as a host nation.

In response, Prime Minister Nabbanja assured lawmakers that the government remains committed to delivering all required infrastructure in time for the tournament. “We are going to be more than ready,” she said, adding that any existing gaps would be addressed within the remaining timeframe.

However, her initial response was met with skepticism from Ssenyonyi, who described it as too general and lacking in detail. He insisted that Parliament and the public need concrete information rather than broad assurances.

“The response is not in tandem with the report raising critical concerns,” he said, urging the government to present a detailed and evidence-based update.

Nabbanja later indicated that Cabinet had discussed the matter and put in place necessary measures to ensure Uganda successfully hosts AFCON 2027. She also supported calls for a more detailed report to be presented before Parliament to address the concerns raised.

The exchange underscores growing anxiety over Uganda’s readiness to host one of Africa’s biggest sporting events. With time running out and expectations high, the government faces mounting pressure to demonstrate tangible progress and restore public confidence.

AFCON 2027 is expected to be a major milestone for Uganda, bringing investment, tourism, and international attention. However, as parliamentary scrutiny intensifies, the coming months will be critical in determining whether the country can deliver on its ambitious promise.
